BOIS FRANCAIS TRENCH LINES

This photograph is taken from the German front line of 1st July 1916 looking towards the Bois Francais front with No Man's Land on the right of the camera position. The village of Fricourt is in the hollow. The 10th West Yorks attacked from the right of the camera position at 0730 hrs on the 1st July with the 7th Green Howards in the hollow on their right holding fast. As has been described, "A" Company of that battalion ignored orders and attacked at 0745 hours only to be devastated by machine gun fire from Wing Corner located at the end of the Sunken Road. The 20th Bn. Manchester Regt. occupied the trenches on the right of the 7th Green Howards their trench line extending up to the present day tree lined ridge of Bois Francais. Siegfried Sassoon watched the battle from a position behind the lines. The location was in the field on the top right of the photo. It was near the Sunken Road that the C.O. of the 20th Manchesters was killed.
