MAMETZ WOOD

The line marks the route taken by Siegfried Sassoon in his one-man attack on Mametz
Wood on 4th July 1916

This photograph is taken from the position of Quadrangle Trench on the 4th July 1916 when it was captured by the 1st Bn. Royal Welch Fusiliers. The British attack (from Bottom Wood) came from the right hand side of the photograph. The bare trees on the right of the photograph mark the edge of Quadrangle Wood. Siegfried Sassoon came up to the recently captured Quadrangle Trench and then followed it towards Mametz Wood. Two small bushes can be seen in the picture. These mark the end of what was then the location of Quadrangle Trench, the position where "Fernby" (2nd Lt. Newton) met Sassoon on 4th July. Sassoon then went further on making his way into Wood Trench which then traversed the field into Mametz Wood, throwing hand grenades at some departing German soldiers. The trees on the skyline on the photograph mark the point from which the descent into Happy Valley and subsequent attack on Mametz Wood were undertaken.
