THE HINDENBURG LINE

 

Almost hidden by undergrowth, nevertheless it is just possible in this photograph to make out the remains of a German bunker, which on 29^th September 1918 was part of the last of the defences forming the Hindenburg Line at La Baraque. Just a few hundred yards to the right of this photograph is "Springbok Valley" down which the 15^th Lancashire Fusiliers marched on their way to attack the village of Joncourt where on the 30th September they came up against the German defences of the Beaurevoir-Fonsomme Line which they were unable to penetrate.
