THE HINDENBURG LINE

Almost hidden by undergrowth, nevertheless it is just possible in this photograph to make out the remains of a German bunker, which on 29th September 1918 was part of the last of the defences forming the Hindenburg Line at La Baraque. Just a few hundred yards to the right of this photograph is "Springbok Valley" down which the 15th Lancashire Fusiliers marched on their way to attack the village of Joncourt where on the 30th September they came up against the German defences of the Beaurevoir-Fonsomme Line which they were unable to penetrate.
