THE MENIN GATE YPRES

The top photograph shows the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing the camera pointing in the direction of the Menin Road. The Memorial contains the names of over 54,000 men who were killed in action in the area between 1914 and 1917 including many from Blunden’s regiment.

Every night at 8 p.m. members of the Ypres Fire Brigade attend at the Memorial and sound the Last Post. The second photograph shows six members of the Fire Brigade standing to attention whilst the Queen Mother’s Pipe Major, who is wearing the uniform of the London Scottish, plays "The Lament".
