ZILLEBEKE LAKE

This area was frequently under German artillery fire, not only in 1915 but right up to the end of hostilities. Casualties were continual. In 1917 an officer of one of the many batteries in the region found a discarded boat on the shores of the lake. Whenever the German artillery opened up he would cram as many of his gunners as he could into the boat and row out into the middle of the lake into comparative safety until the barrage was over. Both sides of the lake were occupied by shanties and dugouts of every kind.
