This photograph was taken from Hellblast Corner looking down the High Street. The Church tower can just be seen through the trees on the left of the picture. The brick wall marks one end of the cemetery. Blunden reports that in March 1917 the tower was "not altogether down".

Normally, the quickest way to the front lines going via Valley Cottages would be to turn left at the end of the street. However, this would be a longer and more dangerous route; Edmund Blunden’s preferred route being the communication trench which passed through the churchyard itself.
