THE CHRISTMAS TRUCE

This is a photograph of the site of part of No Man's Land where, in December 1914 just north of Ploegsteert Wood ("Plugstreet") the famous "Christmas Truce" took place.

One of those who walked out into No Man's Land on Christmas Day and met German officers was the popular cartoonist of that time- Lt.Bruce Bairnsfather of the Royal Warwicks. He writes:-" brought out my wire clippers…and removed a couple of buttons from his (a German officer’s uniform). I then gave him two of mine in exchange."

The fraternisation which took place in a number of places along the front line was frowned upon by the authorities and was not allowed to take place again.
