This building was once a Casualty Clearing Station. Behind the building is the CWGC Hopstore cemetery. The WW1 poet and writer, Edmund Blunden was here with the 11th Royal Sussex during Third Ypres and recounts how the roadway and paths were paved with wooden railway sleepers. Nearby was a huge ammunition dump which was hit from above and he heard "the irritated crackling of myriads of cartridges and small explosive, interspersed with thunder-shocks….."
