HEDD WYN

(No. 61117 Pte Ellis Humphrey Evans)

(15th Royal Welch Fusiliers)

The Royal Welch Fusiliers is sometimes called the "Literary Regiment" because it had an above average number of poets in its ranks during WW1. e.g. Robert Graves, Siegfried Sassoon and David Jones. Pte Evans must be included in this list.

Hedd Wyn’s battalion was amongst those on the 31st July 1917 ordered forward to capture Pilckem and Langemarck. Pilckem was swiftly taken but further progress proved impossible and the battalion was stopped about a mile from Langemarck. Hedd Wyn was wounded in the chest and later died. A few weeks after his death it was announced that he was the winner at the National Eisteddfod held in Birkenhead. Alas, he had fallen on the field of battle and was unable to receive his award.

This plaque is affixed to the wall of one of the buildings on the Boezinge to Langemarck road at Iron Cross.
